Pietermaritzburg, founded in 1839, is the capital and second largest city of the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Its "purist" Zulu name is umGungundlovu meaning - The Secret Place of the Elephant. Notable city attractions are the Natal Museum, Tatham Art Gallery, City Hall and SANBI Botanical Gardens.
